Are Aussiedoodles Hypoallergenic? You May Be Surprised

Are Aussiedoodles Good For Families With Allergies?

As a general rule, Aussiedoodles are hypoallergenic. Simply put, you can rest assured that your nose won’t tickle uncontrollably every time you snuggle your doodle. You also need not worry about checking the couch before sitting down for fear of skin rashes erupting due to pet hair or dander.

So, you can look forward to enjoying your adorable, affectionate, and intelligent doodle’s company to the fullest without any hesitation.

Given that ‘hypoallergenic’ refers to something that does not trigger allergic or asthma symptoms, Aussiedoodles are a perfect example owing to half of their DNA having come from the Poodle.

The other half of their DNA comes from the Australian Shepherd, which is a moderate shedder. Therefore, the claim that Aussiedoodles do not cause allergy at all, in some cases, would be incorrect.

Since their genetic makeup determines the ability to drive allergy, there is likely to be a variation for better or worse.

What Is Meant By ‘Hypoallergenic’?

Pet hair, pollen, and dander are agents that might cause you to start sneezing as you might be a little sensitive. Other symptoms of an allergic reaction include skin rashes, which might appear in the form of patches.

You can itch frequently as well. Regardless of the type, allergic reactions are extremely uncomfortable, often to the point of making you feel sick all the time. This explains why you must not bring home a dog if you are sensitive.

An allergy occurs when dogs and other pets shed or bring pollen and dust from their outdoor excursions. That being said, the good news is that not all dogs are born equal when it comes to shedding, and Poodles stand way above others as non-shedders.

Because Aussiedoodles are the progeny of Poodles, they too score high on the non shedders list and qualify as hypoallergenic.

In addition to minimal shedding, hypoallergenic dog breeds also have coats that do not retain dust or pollen. As a hybrid, their saliva and urine also lack the allergy-causing protein, thus proving safe.

So, for someone who might be sensitive, hypoallergenic is what matters most in terms of feeling comfortable around your doodle.

What Makes Aussiedoodles Hypoallergenic?

Aussiedoodles proudly wear the label of being hypoallergenic because –

  • Their coat remains immune to seasonal changes, as opposed to some breeds that discard their old coats during a specific season to be replaced by a new one;
  • Shedding in doodles does not worsen with age, unlike some other dog breeds;
  • On average, they are low-maintenance and do not leave a mess that could possibly trigger a reaction;

Hypoallergenic trait of Aussiedoodles is also attributed to the two parents that create this hybrid. One of the parents is the Poodle, which is well-known for minimal shedding. The Poodle’s coat is not just curly but is also unable to retain dander.

This renders the Poodle a perfect pet option for anyone who might be asthmatic or is sensitive to the point of experiencing discomfort at the sight of pet hair.

An Australian Shepherd, the other parent in the mix, has a straight coat that tends to fluff up rather quickly. It also sheds a lot, thus balancing out the poodles’ non-shedding coat.

However, this does not reflect the Aussiedoodles Poodle gene being dominant and determining the degree of shedding and dander. There might be exceptions to this norm, but they are few and far between, thus leaving most Aussiedoodles with the tag of being hypoallergenic or allergy-friendly.

Aussiedoodles Generations and Coat Types

Just like a human child may take after either of the parents, Aussiedoodles also do the same. However, the parentage spectrum is relatively much broader in doodles, courtesy, which has plenty of variation amidst the hybrid.

Grooming Aussiedoodles to Minimize Allergy

For you and your Aussiedoodle to enjoy a close and affectionate bond, regular grooming is a must. The grooming needs of your doodle are more or less same as that of its Poodle parent, particularly in terms of brushing and bathing.

Essential grooming requisites that keep the Aussiedoodles in good shape are –

  • Thoroughly brushing their curly coats every day to prevent matting, tangling, and knotting;
  • Trimming of the coat every three months to ensure that the doodle does not develop any coat related issues;
  • Bathing at least once a week to wash off the dirt and dander which might have gathered over a specific duration;

Regular and mindful grooming will keep your doodle free from allergens, and this, in turn, would work in your favor by minimizing the chances of allergy.

So, even though grooming might seem like a lot of hard work, it does pay off well in the long run. For your doodle, it translates into a hypoallergenic pet, and for you, it implies clean surroundings and reduced hassles.

Protecting Your Home from Dog Allergies

It might happen that despite all precautions, your adorable doodle may not turn out to be less hypoallergenic than expected. By this time, you are undoubtedly too attached to the energetic and intelligent little chap and would not even dream of giving it away.

In such a situation, the next best thing is to take appropriate steps that would keep the allergens at bay, and this entails –

  • Run the vacuum cleaner, preferably one equipped with a HEPA filter, on every surface in your home;
  • Dust and sun-dry the doodle’s bed and blanket on a daily basis;
  • Ensure a high-nutrition diet for your Aussiedoodle, given the logic that a healthy doodle means less shedding and dander, and hence reduced allergies;
  • Comb out the tangles and knots at every opportunity so that the curls remain bouncy and dirt-free;
  • While bathing the doodle, pick a mild shampoo to preserve the natural oils and prevent the skin from drying out and flaking;

Final Thoughts

Prevention is always better than cure, and by taking appropriate precautions, you will not just steer clear of the misery that allergies cause but also ensure the good health of your special doodle.
